I believe that everyone has some experience of being bullied when they were young. Young and childish, kids will tend to be ‘not-so-nice’ to their peers. Have you ever been in a situation where your friend gave you an ultimatum; either to be friends with him/her or the ‘other person’ just simply because he/she didn’t like the ‘other person’ ? Childish – hor? This was the time you learn about friendship, managing it and how you want your circle of friends to be. This was also a crucial time where you developed some characteristics regarding relationships. For example, being submissive to your friends’ demands because you wanted to blend in or were you a person who would not feel obligated to do whatever your friends do? As for me, I feel blessed to have met some wonderful people where beautiful friendships were built along the way.
But, I remember an incident where I was bullied. I wouldn’t feel so strongly about the incident if the proprietor wasn’t a person whom I consider my ‘good friend’. We hung out together a lot and saw each other almost every day. After that day, the little Eunice wasn’t so naive anymore. My so-call friend taught me a lesson: not everyone is nice and honest. However, thanks to that incident, I also learned something good. I learned to cherish nice people, and to treasure friendship, simply because it is hard to find friends who genuinely care about you.
I was in my primary 2 or 3. During that time, a mobile library will come to our school where students can read and borrow books. Mobile library is usually a van which carries children books and it go from place to place to provide its service. I really loved to read when I was younger. Little Eunice loved to experience the magic and the fantasies when she read those books. Little Eunice absolutely loved Enid Blyton! So, Little Eunice was very excited when she knew that a mobile library is coming to her school for the first time! Little Eunice bought a card which was needed in order to borrow books. The card cost $0.50. It was a lot of money for Little Eunice at that time, since her favourite karipap only cost RM 0.10. Ya, cheap food. Those were the days. =). So everyone queued to get into the van. Then Little Eunice noticed, “aiks, how come the card of the person in front of me has a cop on it? Mine dun have”. So she asked a peer behind her about the stamp. Then Little Eunice heard “Shh“. Little Eunice looked around and it was from her ‘good friend’ . Her peers avoided having eye-contact with her. “Wah, I didn’t know she is so influential”. Little Eunice felt bad, but she really really wanted to get on the library, so she gingerly asked another person. Once again, all Little Eunice got was an empty silence. Tears started pouring from her eyes. Little Eunice threw the card away, feeling upset, disappointed and heartbroken. As for Little Eunice’s ‘good friend’, she treated her just as a ‘friend’ from that time onwards. They are okay with each other, just as normal friends.
