The Dish … and lions

29 03 2008

Planned to get some exercise at the Stanford Dish area to get some fresh air and enjoy the greeneries. The dish (radiotelescope) is on a hill, and ppl jog/hike and get some exercise around the area….

That was the original plan until we saw this sign.

StanfordDish1

It seems like the lions are tame? Since I did not see any warning
sign about the danger of the lions, or signs which says you are entering at your own risk.
I guess the lions are comfortable with humans presence.

Hmm….thinking very very hard if we should enter….We are talking about LIONS here! I am terrified of stray dogs, much more so lions! Did not bring any protection to ward off/overpower lions … No stick, pepper spray nor martial arts to ward off/ fight back an attacking lion…. So in the end, I just went in about 5 meters in the area to take a pic with the dish signboard. Maybe if we came in a bigger group of people, I will be less fearful.

Then, we just walked around Stanford University area.

ERT …? What’s that

28 03 2008

I recently joined the ERT ( Emergency Response Team ) at my workplace. I feel that it would be useful to know some safety procedures. :) There are 3 trainings ro complete: evacuation, first aid and fire extinguisher.

After going for the evacuation training (just in case, the is earthquake o_o etc ), I was giving a big placard indicating that I am a point of contact if case of an emergency.. Very paisae to put the placard up, since all I knew was , if the sirens go off, empty the building.. ;P

I have just successfully completed a basic CPR, AED and First Aid for adult! Upon completion of the training, we were given a certificate of a size of a business card for us to carry around with us. The certification is only valid for 2 years. Hopefully, I will never encounter a situation where I have to use what I learned from the training…

One of the interesting fact I learned was that Good Samaritan law protects those who tried to help the injured or ill. So, if anything bad happens to person you are helping, you can’t be sued. However, you must get the person’s consent, if the person is concious before helping them to be protected by the Samaritan law.

Also, there is actually a mouth to mouth barrier which you can use when you perform mouth-to-mounth. This is to avoid you and the victim exchanging diseases. I think this is neat. I guess what you see in movies regarding lifeguards trying to resucitate other ppl without any barriers do not reflect what happen in real life.

AED (automated external defibrillator ) is portable electronic device that diagnoses and treats cardiac arrest. If a person has cardiac arrest, AED will allow you to electric shock the person with a press of button. Apparently this device is very common now, available in public places.

In the training, a lot of ppl were concerned of being legally liable if anything bad happen to the victims. Their concerns were not surprising because … well … it is common for ppl here to sue even for the slightest things. Heard of ppl suing McD coz the food makes them fat? So, make sure you ask for permission if you can help before doing anything.

Cirque du Soleil

16 03 2008

It was great! Had been looking forward to this the whole past week… Although I am sure Karen was more excited than me :) …..This is not a circus, no animals, although it has clowns. :)  It is an artsy- type of performance . I enjoyed it, but I will think twice about going to another one, since the ticket is quite pricey:)

Happy Birthday Paokong….or… Chern Yih

10 03 2008

Celebrated our dearest Paokong’s Birthday last Saturday! He prefers to be refered as his real name … now …, (as he is more mature …now). But how can we call him Chern Yih when we have been refering him as Paokong (Paokong as in Pao Ching Tian)  for more than 4 years?? Habit dies hard lah

Watched 10000B.C. It was okay, the first half is abit draggy though, in my opinion. But overall, it was okay.

Had dinner at Erawan Thai Restaurant. Yummy! Thai is good. I like spicy food.

And then we headed back to our place to have the cake-ceremony.

PINK is the color!

9 03 2008

I have been asking my dad to paint my room PINK since I was in primary school until high school, but he always said NO.

Then, last week, he told me he painted my room PINK !… I totally forgot that I wanted my room to be painted PINK when I was younger. I guess he must be missing me. =P  Although I am not as eager as last time to have my room painted PINK, but it is so sweet of him! Can’t wait to see my room!   ^_^

Thanks for remembering! You are the best!
